Oxytocin and GLP-1s: why weight-loss buyers are looking at it

Updated from live data. Research use only. Prices, not recommendations.

Oxytocin turns down the brain's response to tempting food in imaging studies, which is why it now comes up next to GLP-1 drugs. The one solid weight trial found it did not move the scale.

The appetite signal is real in the lab

Across several brain-imaging studies, people given nasal oxytocin showed less activity in reward areas when shown high-calorie food, and some ate fewer snacks in a test meal afterward. Animal studies go further, with lower food intake and weight. That is the case people make when they pair it with a GLP-1.

The weight trial came back flat

An 8-week randomized trial in 61 adults with obesity, published in 2024, found no difference in body weight between oxytocin and placebo. GLP-1 drugs, by contrast, were approved on trials running more than a year with thousands of people, such as STEP 1 for semaglutide. The two are not at the same stage of evidence, and no published trial has tested them together.

Different hormones, different jobs

Semaglutide and tirzepatide mimic gut hormones (GLP-1, and GLP-1 plus GIP) that slow the stomach and signal fullness. Cagrilintide mimics amylin, another fullness hormone. Oxytocin is a brain hormone whose effect on eating looks like a side effect of its role in reward and stress.

What each costs per mg today

Per mg, research oxytocin starts at $1.35 against $0.467 for semaglutide. Per-mg prices don't compare amounts used, since these peptides are studied at very different quantities.

How we measured this

Prices are each vendor's cheapest live listing: list price plus any shipping estimate, minus the sale and the sitewide code we show on the compare page, divided by total mg. Median is across vendors, one listing each. The research summaries link to the published studies; we report what they found and give no use or dosing guidance.

No vendor pays for placement and none of these numbers is a ranking for sale. Buy links on the pages linked here may earn us a commission. More on how the site works on the about page.
